Why This Matters

  • If we lose the Maloti Minnow, we lose part of our planet’s biodiversity forever.
  • Critically endangered species – found nowhere else on Earth.
  • Only found at one place of the world - The Lesotho Highlands.

Hidden in the clear, cold mountain streams of Lesotho, the tiny fish Maloti Minnow (Pseudobarbus quathlambae) is on the brink of extinction. Once thriving, this unique species is now critically endangered (IUCN). It suffers from:

  • Habitat loss
  • Invasive species, like rainbow trout or yellow fish
  • Climate change
